Fire Evacuation Procedures
- Assist any person in immediate danger to safety,
if it can be accomplished without risk to you.
- Immediately call 911 to report the fire (or
activate fire alarm)
- If the fire is small enough, use a nearby fire
extinguisher to control and extinguish the fire.
- If the first attempts to put out the fire do not
succeed, evacuate the building immediately.
- Use the nearest, accessible exit to evacuate.
- If you have to escape through smoke, crawl keeping
your head 1 to 2 feet above the floor, where the air is the cleanest.
- Doors, and if possible, windows, should be closed
as the last person leaves a room or area since this will slow the spread
of fire and smoke.
- Test doorknobs and spaces around closed doors with
the back of your hand. If the door is warm, try another escape route.
If it is cool, open it slowly. Slam the door shut if smoke pours
through.
- Do not use elevators. Use only the church
stairwells.
- Upon evacuation of the church, all should proceed
to the church parking lot until everyone can be accounted for.
- Never reenter the church without permission from
the fire department.
Tornado Safety Procedures
- If a tornado WARNING is issued, you must evacuate
to a safe place IMMEDIATELY until an “all clear” has been issued.
- On your way, help the disabled or elderly if they
have difficulty walking or using the stairs.
- If you are inside the church, evacuate to the
safest location to protect yourself from glass and other flying
objects.
- The safest location is in the basement away from
windows. The safest rooms in the church basement are the robe room,
bathrooms, hallway by the bathrooms, kitchen, and the quilters room.
- If, for some reason, you cannot get to the
basement, take shelter in a hallway, closet, or small room toward the
inside of the church, away from windows.
- If possible, get under a piece of sturdy
furniture, such as a workbench or heavy table, and hold on to it.
Sturdy furniture will help protect you from falling debris. If tornado
wind enters the room and the object moves, holding on with one hand will
help you move with it, keeping you protected. Use your other arm and
hand to protect your head and neck from falling or flying objects.
- If there is no furniture to go under, crouch on
the floor and place your hands and arms over your head.
